Guy Fawkes Run (November 2021)

Venue: Cheddar Garden Centre, Sunday 7th. 10.30 for 11.00 depart. This year we’ve been requested to assemble at the top of the car park, furthest from the facilities. At least the bike assembly is very obvious to everyone driving in and the hike to the cafe (and back) does get the blood circulating…

A good turn out at the Garden Centre, possibly helped by the promise of another dry day. The car-park line-up was impressive enough to get the attention of some passers-by, and there were at least a couple of auspicious machines in it. Oldest bike today was Chips’ 1927 Coventry Eagle but we had a second girder-fork bike present in the guise of a WD BSA.

When we finally got away(!) the route took us across the Levels past Wedmore and out towards Croscombe, then for a contrast up over the Mendips, down for  a short run along Chew Valley and up again for more Mendip views to finish with a run down the Gorge and a return to the Garden Centre. The weather folk were right about it being dry, but up over the tops it was definitely ‘second overcoat’ temperatures according to the more….experienced…riders. Good job about that hike to the cafe to get warmed up again!

Only casualty was a particularly pesky puncture, and there were a few splinter groups along the way. (Difficult to say if this was down to people getting lost or just being smarty-pants and putting in their own route improvements!) A very enjoyable 40 miles, and thanks go to Richard for organising.
