“Chairman’s Day Out” (May 2022)
Saturday 14th May, 9:30 for 10:00 at Pitney Playing Field.
The weather forecast was fine for the start, with the prospect of thunderstorms from late afternoon. At 8.30 things were a little grey and some hills were obscured, suggesting rain – however, time to trust in the Met Office…
For a short time the car park was looking like the venue for an Ariel Club meeting. Then someone turned up on a Velocette (worse, a very shiny Velocette)! Thereafter the venue steadily filled until there were a couple of dozen two- and three-wheelers present, with a wide variety of machines.
We were also joined by a visitor from ‘across the pond’ – Dave from Minnesota, who’d arranged to use the VMCC’s FJ Yamaha to tour some UK ‘antique bike’ events. (A Yamaha FJ might be a bit new but it had clearly been skillfully ‘prepared’ to give that authentic old bike experience, with ‘tinkering’ challenges to ensure the maximum enjoyment from every journey…and Dave was proving to be well up to these!)
The route for the ride took us north across the Levels as far as the A39, then back over North Moor to North Curry and east towards Fivehead for a coffee stop – a mix of highways and byways, the countryside looking fresh with late-spring colour.
By now the grey skies had burnt off and it was full warm sunshine for the return to Pitney, a shorter route but with a scenic loop south and east across West Moor, finally skirting round Langport to the Playing Fields for a line-up across the grass and a barbecue.
No trace of thunderstorms, midsummer-like sunshine and thankfully a gazebo for shade to sit under!
All-in-all quite an eventful day, what with visitors from afar arriving with some bike ‘puzzles’ and a couple of folks who should have known better going completely ‘off piste’, but fortunately everyone ended up back at the Playing Fields for Food and Social.
Many thanks to ‘ex-chairman’ Ruth for an excellent day out!
